NEWSLETTER DESIGN
Resident Assistant Newsletter
Tools: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator
Challenge
The University of Maryland’s Department of Resident Life needed to transition an annual print-based newsletter into a digital format that remained easy to read on screens and simple to update year over year.
Role
Graphic Designer, responsible for restructuring the layout for digital use, designing the newsletter logo, and creating a flexible color system that could adapt to changing annual themes.

Impact

01 Improved Readability for Digital Distribution
Redesigned the newsletter layout to prioritize clear hierarchy, spacing, and scanability on screens. This made the content easier to consume digitally compared to the original print-oriented layout.

02 Reusable, Theme-Flexible Design System
Created a modular layout and color scheme that could be updated annually without redesigning the newsletter from scratch. This reduced future design effort while preserving visual consistency.

03 Clear Information Hierarchy
Organized content into predictable sections, helping readers quickly find key announcements, deadlines, and opportunities. This improved clarity for both new and returning readers.

04 Extended Value Beyond the Initial Use Case
The newsletter design was adopted as a reference for other internal communications, demonstrating its usefulness as a repeatable visual system rather than a one-off document.
Lessons Learned & Next Steps
This project highlighted the importance of designing print-inspired materials with digital behavior in mind. A next step would be validating layout effectiveness through engagement metrics or reader feedback to further refine hierarchy and pacing.
